World Lux

What is the History of World Lux? How did it all begin? John Craver had been in the wholesale stationery business since he returned from WWII, and saw an opportunity for a pen specialist shop in 1973. Fountain pens were on the wane and Craver knew how passionate people were about them. He figured a shop that could still repair the 'old pens' would be valuable to the people who treasured them.

Since its inception in 1973 as Seattle Pen Repair, World Lux Inc. has grown and evolved with the times to become the company it is today. They have an award-winning website and a beautiful showroom in the historic Olympic Fairmont Hotel in Seattle and are proud to offer exceptional customer service and great products that include the worlds most remarkable pens, interesting Swiss watch brands, and traditional leather accessories. Though they do have a variety of high-quality personal accessories, their roots are in pens, and to this day pens account for the majority of the company's sales.

Are the staff at World Lux passionate pen collectors? Todd Craver speaks for his staff here when he says, "Our staff is passionate about a couple of things: 1) PEOPLE! We all love taking care of customers and making sure they are happy! And 2) Quality - whether it is a new entry-level fountain pen for students or a top-Model from a great brand such as Conway Stewart, we're all passionate about well designed high-quality products that work well and stand the test of time!"

What is the buying experience World Lux offers to its consumers through the store and website? With over 35 years in the industry, their seasoned staff is happy to share their experience and knowledge with customers, whether they are looking for a fine writing instrument or quality timepiece. The staff there is engaged in the business and is up to date with the latest happenings and newest products in the industry. They want to give their customers the best experience possible, and to do this they listen to the potential customer and do their very best to match those customers with the products they have. If they don't have what they believe is in the customer’s best interest, they will refer them along to whoever can provide the product or service they need. The goal at World Lux is to help people and have loyal customers that come to them for things they need. "Making a sale" if it is not right for the customer, is not right for them, and works against their values.

How has the internet changed the way World Lux deals with customers? It has given World Lux access to a larger audience, and they love that! Whether they are helping a customer find what they are seeking via email, in-person or over the telephone, it is the same to them and they say, “Listening is the key”. How much does the company depend on the internet for sales? Internet is the third leg of the stool; Store, catalogs/mail-order/telephone, and the shopping cart on our web site. They all matter and each needs the other for the stool to sit solidly and support the company. Does World Lux attend any pen show exhibitions? Throughout the years World Lux has had and continues to have many events, such as Anniversary celebrations and new product introductions. As early as 1988 they were having 'pen fairs', back when the Parker Duofold was 100 years old. Even today loyal customers and vendors remember that event and still do business with World Lux and patronize the shop. World Lux has a great relationship with its customers, so even those who have moved away still call and have their products ship to them, whether in Portland, Oregon, or Saudi Arabia!

What makes World Lux special and why should customers contact the store? Because World Lux has stood the test of time and people can trust our staff to steer them right with their extensive experience and knowledge.

Which pen do you like and why? Todd – My favourite Conway Stewart pen is the Churchill with the lever filler. The pen is traditional and classic, and the lever filling mechanism channels the great vintage fountain pens. The lever filler has with-stood the test of time so that even in 2010, it works great and is just really cool. Also, the Churchill pens come with a cigar, which I love, and a nice little book of Churchill quotes.

Sara –I like Conway Stewart's 18k gold Italic nibs, especially the Medium Italic! The line variation and smoothness of the nibs creates an enjoyable writing experience. I also love the ease in which you can interchange the different nibs back and forth. It allows me to write with the proper Italic size for the project I am working on.

Marsha – …Tough to choose a favourite with all the beautiful colour choices! If I had to mark a favourite, it would be the Winston Collection. I prefer a larger pen and the weight and balance of the Winston is great in my hand. I prefer a very basic, classic design, so my choice is the black fountain pen with the Sterling Silver trim! When writing long letters, the comfort of the barrel is great and my hand never seems to tire. It is a classic design I will pass down to generations to come!

Nate – I like the sterling silver of the Finesse pens. They have a good weight and the sterling looks great on this model. You can actually see the silver through the veneer, which is a really cool effect and gives the pen a kind of luminescence that is really unusual. The Cerulean Blue is especially bright, though I think my favourite is the Pistachio, which is a darker blue/green with some red and yellow under tones thrown in.

Megan – My favourite is the Regency pen in the Coral Green. The colours of the resin are beautiful and the curves of the pens are distinctive and make the pen very comfortable to use.
